Best Venues in Andover and the Worst

Postby Mark on Wed May 30, 2007 2:43 pm

Best 4 have got to be
1. The Station Hotel - Always a really full. Plus good vibe
2. The Anton - tight little venue but great atmosphere
3. The Angel - Very tight and now heaving as bands on every week
4. Borough Arms - not sure if they are having bands on any more, but was great.

Middle Group
1. Town Mills - Don't have band to often
2. Propaganda - As its Thursday its not always that busy.
3. Crown - I know its luggershall but close enough
4. Wolversdeane club - Ok, just that paying to get it doesn't seem right

Best Avoided.
The Enham Club - The land that time forgot.
The Bishops Blaze - Need say know more.
The Queen Charlotte - Not a bad venue, but just to far out of time

Others -
The Lamb - seem to be having bands on quite often now. How the hell do you get a band in never mind an audience.

WHAT DO THINK ?

Hi Mark,
Yes i agree with your best 4 - although the Angel is my favourite.
I saw Bizr at the Angel last weekend and they were great. I've seen SOH and Stonepig there as well recently.

Dunno about the Borough, I think they've sold the pub haven't they?
Hopefully the new people will have live music because it's my closest pub (100 yards  )

The Anton is good too, although bit of a squeeze getting to the bar. I reckon there would be more room if they moved that HUUUGGGEEE table out of the way (the one in front of the band).

The Enham Club - The land that time forgot.

Poor old Enham Club! bit low on the numbers were they? Do you have to pay to get in?

I suppose clubs like the Wolversdene have to charge to get in (free to their members I would assume?), I wouldn't mind paying a couple of quid to get through the door. At least with clubs, there's usually a lot more space and you can get to the bar easily - and the beer is maybe a bit cheaper. I probably wouldn't pay more than a fiver though.

The Blaize was disappointing last time I was there. The music was great, but the band was stuck around a corner where no-one could see them, and the small amount of people at the bar seemed to be asleep, deaf or stoned. Can't remember who the band was, but they were annoyed.

Live music in the Lamb? seriously? I assume you're not talking about the bar at the top? - You couldn't fit any more than a football team in there.
Last time I was in the Lamb, there was a Thai restaurant in the bottom bar, but that was quite a while ago so perhaps it has changed.

Still not made it to the Charlotte yet - might check it out on 9th or 16th June.

best and worse gigs in andover

Postby shaunb on Mon Jun 04, 2007 5:24 pm

The Station - always packed and up for the rocking experience
The Angel - New venue for us and was a great place to play (small!)
Queen Charlotte - Out of town but always supported well by friends/punters

The Anton - was good until we were double booked!
The Railway - hmmmm !!!
Wolversdene Club - They like club bands and we are more pub!

We always have local support so each venue we play is cool and makes a great atmosphere. Good to get support from other local bands like Stonepig and Least is more. Stick together and support each other i say :-)

The best venues in town are for sure the station and the angel - they love their rock.

Borough will be under new ownership in a week or so, and I've been told they'll have a music lisence. We played a great gig in there just before christmas and was totally packed and another pub where they appreciate good music, but was that the christmas effect ? Would be interesting to see what it's like gigging there on a normal saturday though.

The Station has to be the best venue to play in! (space for band and space for a big crowd - awesome)

And the Angel too (not so much space but what a rocking crowd!)

Hang on ....I think i'm just repeating what everyone else is saying!

Station Rocks!

Royal Oak

Postby Mark on Mon Aug 06, 2007 7:27 am

Royal Oak Charlton

Played there about a month ago. First time they had had music there for about 2 years. Great gig. bar takings were three time normal and its was rammed. Perhaps helped a bit as it was Dave's, Adie's and my local.

Not quite the room like the Station, but a great place to play. Got to be one of the best. They may have occasion music there next year.

Playing at the Borough Arms, Andover

Postby Just Testing! on Mon Oct 08, 2007 12:32 am

Hi all!

We're a band that has played at the Borough Arms twice since it has been under new management (incl. last Sat eve) - good atmosphere, fun pub, friendly staff and punters...ask the landlord about us for feedback!

Come and see us there on 01 December 2007! :D

I thought you said venues??

Postby Richie Madisun on Wed Nov 26, 2008 12:59 pm

Im generally concerned that no one has mentioned the only 2 places in Andover that actually are "venues".

The Lights & The George , Andover are surely the only real venues as they have their own Rig / Stage / Lights etc. where as the places you've mentioned are pubs with space made for a band to set up and bring their own Rig / Lighting.

Dont get me wrong, I love The Station & The Angel and they have perfect areas for bands to play but there still not a venue, not like a proper touring circuit venue.

Hi Richie,

Yep you're right, the Lights and the George are the "proper" circuit venues in town and it's good to see so many local bands/artists playing in them now. The pubs are great for a regular Saturday night out (my favourite gigs have been the Rock Jams in the Station or the Bizr/Stonepig "BizPig" collaboration in September), but I love going to The Lights - they've had some great gigs on, including the acoustic nights that I never miss. Lacey always gets a good line-up sorted.

Stealer are at the Angel this Saturday - they are always fun.
but
Less Is More are having their 100th gig at the Royal Oak.... decisions decisions... I'll have to do both :) - TAXI!!!

Postby SECOND TIME AROUND on Wed Feb 04, 2009 10:33 pm

Just played The Railway Tavern saturday and was good to see some familiar and some new faces enjoying our music and banter, always enjoy playing there, good crowd 8) .
I also like The Station 8) , played there twice and had fun, The Queen Charlotte was ok but not very well supported, The Enham Club made us welcome and we had a good gig there and gave them a great time, The Central Club was ok, least favourite was The Wolverdene Club which had bad accoustics, no support from the audience and we got told to turn down LOL, you dont have a rock n roll band then tell them to play quietly   .
Never too old to rock !
